How do we handle land occupations in a legal, fair way?
In local community groups and public forums, the occupation of greenbelts and public spaces has become a very divisive topic. But what are the rights and responsibilities of the groups involved, from the City to the occupiers and the local residents? Kelly Kropman, a human rights attorney, talks us through the legal responsibilities, and her experience assisting displaced people, while we hear from two residents’ associations about what they are doing to try and curb the impact of occupations on their communities. Everyone has a right to dignity in South Africa, so how do we hold the municipality to account and work together to find a solution to the blight of inequality in our city? |
